Prof. Ashkan qualified in 1993 with a commendation in medicine and a first class honours degree in biochemistry. He underwent dual postgraduate training in surgery and medicine at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Hammersmith and Royal Brompton Hospitals, obtaining the MRCP in 1997 and the FRCS of England and Glasgow in 1998. Thereafter, he underwent higher specialist training in neurosurgery at Kings College, The National, Atkinson Morley's, Charing Cross, Great Ormond Street and Princess Royal Hospitals, being awarded the FRCS in Neurosurgery in 2002.

His subspecialist training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery included a fellowship in France with Prof. Benabid, generally considered as the founder of deep brain stimulation, which led to a MD degree.

He was a senior lecturer in functional neurosurgery at the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from 2004 to 2006. He then moved to Kings College Hospital London where he is the Professor of Neurosurgery, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Lead for Neuro-Oncology.

He is committed to actively developing new and novel therapies for optimal patient care and has published over 300 full papers, abstracts and book chapters in various aspects of neurosurgery including brain tumours; treatment of movement disorders, Parkinson's disease and intractable pain; and back pain and spinal disease. As a result of his continual innovation, he recently launched a new form of spinal cord simulation at Harley Street Clinic targeting the dorsal root ganglion (DRG).

In June 2015, Prof. Ashkan was elected as the new President of the British Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and he took up the post in June 2016.

In 2016 Prof Ashkan was elected to the chairmanship of the Genomics England's programme for brain tumours.
