Dr Stephen Schey qualified at St George's Hospital in 1974, and later travelled to Australia where he worked at the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research in Sydney as Clinical Lecturer in Haematology. In subsequent years, he returned to London to work at the Royal Free Hospital as Transplant Co-ordinator before working at the Royal Marsden and later the Middlesex Hospital. He subsequently served as Director of Clinical Haematology for the Guy's/St Thomas' Trust from 1993-2004.Dr Schey has contributed his services to a number of professional bodies. Most notably for the UK, he has been the Chair of the UK Myeloma Forum since 2003, following two terms as the Secretary from 1997. He is Clinical Lead for South East Thames Cancer Network, which he has held since 2005. In addition, he has several government responsibilities, including involvement in the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) Haemoncology Cancer Steering Group since 2002. Designing and conducting clinical trials is a special interest for Dr Schey. He is Chairman of the NCRI Myeloma Clinical Trials Committee. He has been Chief Investigator and Co-investigator for a large number of clinical trials. His research interests are in multiple myeloma and the bone marrow microenvironment as potential novel therapeutic targets, and haemopoietic stem cell transplantation and he leads the Kings College Myeloma Translational Research Group at the Rayne Institute Denmark Hill.
