Mr Richard Sainsbury is an Onco-Plastic breast surgeon trained in all aspects of breast diseases including reduction and augmentation. He was one of the proponents of Sentinel node biopsy when it was introduced into the UK in the 1990's. His research interests include breast cancer cell cycle control mechanisms and the use of new hormonal agents.Richard is Consultant Breast Surgeon at IOW NHS Trust having taken up the post in the summer of 2007. From 2000 he was at University College London Medical School where he was Reader in Surgery and Honorary Consultant Surgeon and Head of Breast Services. Prior to that he was a Consultant Surgeon in Huddersfield for 13 years. He has retained his ongoing research programme at UCL with colleagues that involves investigating the mechanisms of breast cancer causation. He has written several books and over 150 scientific papers related to breast cancer. He is happy to see patients with benign or malignant breast diseases and to provide second opinions. He works closely with other members of the Wellington Breast Unit so patients will benefit from a multidisciplinary approach.
