Professor Shakeel Saeed has over 10 years of Consultant experience managing a wide range of balance disorders and vertigo including benign positional vertigo, Meniere's disease, as well as complex balance and hearing problems. His special interests include Neurotology, balance disorders, skull base surgery and cochlear implantation. He was appointed Professor of Otology/Neuro-otology at the UCL Ear Institute and Consultant ENT and Skullbase Surgeon at The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital and Royal Free Hospital, London in September 2008. He is on the Faculty of The British Society of Otology annual Balance Course.
Professor Saeed qualified from Guy's and King's College Hospitals, London followed by registrar training in ENT surgery at The Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London. He completed his Senior Registrar training in ENT surgery in Manchester. He has international recognition as an Otology Research Fellow in San Francisco, USA, studying cochlear nerve growth factor receptors, and was also was a Fellow in Neurotology and Skull base surgery at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. He received the Gold medal for his doctorate thesis in 2002, from the University of Manchester following his research work studying the molecular genetics of otosclerosis at the University of Manchester.
Professor Saeed was appointed Consultant Otolaryngologist and Skullbase Surgeon, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Hope Hospital, January 1999. Publications and presentations in skullbase, cochlear implantation, facial nerve rehabilitation, Meniere's disease, neurotology and otosclerosis are a few of the topics Prof Saeed has made a contribution to the ENT profession. He is a Council member of the British Association of Otolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons (2005 to 2008) as well as the Specialty Advisory Board, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and British Cochlear Implant Group. He was a council member for the ENT Specialty Training North West Deanery (Programme Director 2003 to 2008). He is also on the Council of the Section of Otology, Royal Society of Medicine. Prof Saeed is currently a faculty member of the Combined British Universities Advanced Otology Course (treasurer) and British Skullbase Society (Treasurer).
Professor Saeed is an instructor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland Temporal bone Course, Mersey Ear Surgery Course, Royal College of Surgeons of England Core ENT Skills Course. He also instructed for the Royal College of Surgeons of England on Approaches to the Skullbase. He is on the editorial board for Doncaster Masterclass in ENT Surgery and lecturer for West Midlands Otology Course.
