Cardiac conditions

  • Heart valve disease

    Need to know

If one of the valves in your heart becomes diseased it can affect the flow of blood. This can happen in one of two ways: valve stenosis (where the valve does not fully open and obstructs or restricts flow) or valve incompetence (where the valve does not close properly and blood is allowed to leak backwards)....

  • Heart failure

    Need to know

Despite its frightening name, heart failure doesn't mean your heart has stopped beating. Rather, it means your heart is weak or stiff, and so may struggle to pump enough blood around, particularly when you exert yourself. This leads to symptoms like breathlessness, ankle swelling and tiredness. It's...

  • High blood pressure

    Need to know

It’s not clear what causes high blood pressure. The vast majority of patients with hypertension display no symptoms and have what is called primary hypertension. This simply means that no underlying cause of the hypertension (such as an adrenal tumour or some form of kidney disease) can be explained.

  • Coronary artery disease

    Need to know

Coronary artery disease is a major cause of death in the UK and results from the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries by a build-up of atheroma. Coronary artery disease can lead to shortness of breath, angina (chest pain) and myocardial infarction (a heart attack).

  • Cardiomyopathy

    Need to know

Cardiomyopathy is an umbrella term for diseases of the heart muscle, where the walls of the heart chambers either become stretched and thin or thickened and stiff. This makes it hard for the heart to pump blood around the body and can lead to heart failure. Cardiomyopathy is often an inherited condition.

  • Cardiac arrhythmia

    Need to know

Arrhythmia is an umbrella term for a number of conditions caused by an abnormal heart rhythm, otherwise known as an irregular heartbeat. As many as two million people in the UK experience heart rhythm problems. Whilst they are clearly common, they should nonetheless be monitored and treated with medication...

  • Pacemakers and defibrillators

    Need to know

A pacemaker or defibrillator can regulate your heartbeat if you have a condition that makes your heart beat too slow or too fast. A pacemaker can speed up your heart if it goes too slow while a defibrillator can correct a fast, life-threatening rhythm. If you have heart failure, it can improve the pumping...
