Dr Ghada Mikhail is an Interventional Cardiology Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London UK. She qualified from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, and was awarded an MD from the University of London. She has gained International experience by spending a year in Italy, in a world renowned centre, on an Interventional Fellowship with Dr Antonio Colombo. Dr Ghada Mikhail treats adult patients with cardiac disease. She specializes in coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty. She also performs permanent pacemaker insertion. Dr Ghada Mikhail assesses and treats patients with valvular heart disease. She introduced the Transcatheter Valve Programme to Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for the treatment of patients with valvular heart disease using percutaneous techniques. These include the TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) for the treatment of patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis and Mitraclip for symptomatic mitral regurgitation. Imperial was the first centre in the UK to perform both the TAVI and Mitraclip procedures.She is also actively involved in the area of cardiovascular disease in women and has founded the Her at Heart Scientific Initiative in the UK whose aims are a) to raise awareness amongst healthcare professionals and the general public on the extent of cardiovascular disease in women and b) to address the issues of under-diagnosis, under-treatment and under-representation of women in research trials. She has chaired symposia and presented at National and International meetings and has published on the same subject. She is a member of the British Cardiovascular Society Working Group for Women's Heart Health which has formulated a policy statement on the management of women with cardiovascular disease. She has also been involved in the European Society Women at Heart Policy Conference which published A Policy Statement on Cardiovascular Disease in Women. She is on the Board of WIN (Women in Innovations) Initiative of the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). She is on the Steering Committee of the SPIRIT Women study, which is the first interventional trial to recruit only women.
