Dr Iqbal Malik

Dr Malik has interests in general cardiology including hypertension, angina and valve disease. In addition he is interested in stroke prevention, including the use of interventional treatments such as hole in the heart closure and carotid artery stenting. He is a specialist in complex coronary treatments such as balloon angioplasty and stenting. Since 2003, he has lead the primary angioplasty (PPCI) team setting up a world class acute heart attack treatment (HAT) centre at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust to patients in West London and beyond.Dr Malik graduated from Cambridge University in 1991. His science training was in Cambridge and with clinical training at Guys Hospital. After qualification, he joined the Royal London Hospital SHO rotation. He was awarded MRCP in 1994.He then trained in cardiology and general medicine on the Royal Postgraduate Medical School rotation at the Hammersmith Hospital, St. Marys Hospital and other hospitals in West London.In 1997, he took a three year sabbatical to complete his PhD at Imperial College, London.He took sabbaticals in Germany and Italy to complete his interventional cardiology training. He is accredited in both cardiology and general medicine.Dr Malik was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at St Marys Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College in 2003 and following the merger of St Marys, Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals with Imperial College is now working at both St. Marys and Hammersmith sites within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.His current research is focused on interventional cardiology: the role of hole in the heart closure in Migraine and stroke, comparison of carotid artery stenting and surgery to prevent stroke and the prevention of angina and heart attacks using coronary angioplasty and surgery. He is on the steering committee for major international clinical trials in these fields.He has an interest in putting patient safety first. He has run multiple audit projects and runs major clinical governance projects at Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust.He has also developed an electronic patient transfer system which has been taken up widely in London and beyond to help patient journey between hospitals.Dr Malik trains undergraduate medical students and post graduate doctors to consultant level both from the UK and overseas.
