Professor Ian Loftus
Endovascular and endovenous surgery, minimally invasive vascular & venous procedures, aortic aneurysms, thoracic outlet syndrome, hyperhidrosis
Qualified and trained in Leicester, Mr Ian Loftus won a number of distinctions and prizes, including a distinction in surgery and the Leicester Medical School/British Medical Association Clinical Prize, before being appointed as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in 2004. He was appointed to help develop the endovascular, complex aortic and carotid practice at St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust and he has also been integral to the expansion of modern treatments for varicose veins, running national training days in laser vein treatments.Mr Loftus has a background in award winning vascular biology research and directs a clinical trials unit. Awards include the Moynihan Prize for the best research presented to the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, and prizes for the best clinical and scientific research presented to the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Recent trials have included the use of gene therapy for vascular disease, and comparisons between minimally invasive varicose vein treatments. He has published over 100 research articles and presented numerous papers internationally.Mr Loftus is interested in teaching and training, and has sat on Regional Training Committees, the NHS Changing Workforce Programme, and The Council of the Association of Surgeons in Training. He is an examiner and Critical Care Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons. He has recently co-edited a major book on endovascular surgery and is on the Editorial Board of the journal 'Atherosclerosis', specialising in vascular disease. At present Mr Loftus is the Lead Clinician for Vascular Surgery at St George's.
