Mr Omer Karim completed his undergraduate training at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School before undergoing his surgical training at the Royal Free Hospital, the Institue of Urology, the Whittington and the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel. As part of his training, Mr Karim undertook two and a half years research at The Brady Institute of Urology, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The Brady is one of the worlds leading centres of excellence for prostate cancer surgery and where 'nerve sparing' surgery was first described. Mr Karim was a Senior Registrar at St Bartholomews Hospitals in London before taking up his position as a consultant urologist at Wexham Park Hospital Slough. He was appointed an Honorary Consultant in Robotic Urological Surgery at St Mary's Hospital Paddington, at the start of the UK's first robotic prostatectomy program in 2004. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in robotic assisted prostatectomy within the UK, having been involved in more than 650 procedures since 2004. Mr Karim is highly experienced in nerve-sparing techniques which can be used when clinically appropriate and are supported by patient reported outcomes. Mr Karim was one of the first surgeons to carry out robotic partial nephrectomy (removal of part of the kidney for cancer) in the UK. He has published extensively and recently described and published a new surgical approach to joining the bladder to the urethra after the prostate has been removed. This new technique may significantly improve urinary continence after robotic assisted prostatectomy. Mr Karim is committed to teaching and has been an invited faculty member of the ERUS (European Robotic Urology Society) meeting. He lectures in the UK and organised the UKs first ERUS Master Class in Robotic Prostatectomy. He is one of the few UK proctors in robotic surgery and frequently supports and instructs surgeons starting out in robotic assisted surgery in the UK and Ireland. He regularly visits the Third World to operate charitably and teach urology. Mr Karim was recently voted one of the UKs top ten prostate cancer surgeons in a poll of urologists for the Daily Mail.
