Dr Harsha Kariyawasam read medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, University of London. He trained in allergy, medical rhinology and respiratory medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital over a period of 7 years. During this time Dr Kariyawasam also completed research training in allergy which lead to his PhD, defining the mechanisms by which allergens can injure tissue and the role of the immune system in initiating and regulating this process. He was awarded the PhD Thesis National Heart and Lung Institute Prize at Imperial College London for this work. He is currently a Consultant in Allergy and Rhinology at the Royal National Throat Nose Ear Hospital, London and honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London. He has a broad based clinical practice covering all aspects of allergy including food and skin allergy to anaphylaxis, with a particular interest in asthma, upper airway allergy and diseases that affect the nose and sinuses (rhinology).In addition, Dr Kariyawasam is actively involved with several research projects to understand disease mechanisms and treatment of asthma, allergic airway diseases and nasal polyps. He has been invited to lecture on his areas of expertise at meetings at both a national and international level with publications in learned journals. He is member of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI), European Academy of Asthma Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the British Thoracic Society (BTS).
