Professor Peter Irving, based at London Digestive Health, is a Consultant Gastroenterologist renowned globally for his expertise in the field. With over 20 years of experience in gastroenterology, he specializes in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, encompassing conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, along with irritable bowel syndrome. He is also a highly skilled endoscopist, performing gastroscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy.

He trained at the University of Cambridge and London Hospital Medical College, where he earned his medical degree, with distinction, in 1995. During his postgraduate training, he developed a passion for research, focusing on inflammatory bowel disease. After completing his training, this led him to Australia for a further period of research in a specialist IBD unit at Monash University in Melbourne. Whilst there, he played a pivotal role in pioneering research on the low FODMAP diet and, upon his return to the UK, he introduced this dietary approach, revolutionising the management of irritable bowel syndrome in the UK.

Professor Irving's commitment to advancing gastroenterology is evident through his active involvement in professional committees. He has previously served on the committee for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology and chaired the Education Committee of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation. Currently, he is a member of the Education Committee of the United European Gastroenterology Foundation.

Within the academic realm, Professor Irving holds the position of Professor of Inflammatory Bowel Disease at King’s College London. His expertise in the field is underscored by his extensive publication history, which exceeds 200 works. Furthermore, he is the author of three books, cementing his authority and contributions to the gastroenterological community.

Fundamentally, however, Professor Irving is a patient-centred gastroenterologist with a wealth of clinical experience and an in-depth understanding of his filed. He is renowned for his excellent communication skills and his ability to help patients to understand their options and to make the right choices.
