As the head of the Neurophysiology department at University College Hospital (UCH) since 1997, Professor Holder has played a pivotal role in advancing the understanding and treatment of neurological disorders.

With a background in both Clinical Medicine and Biophysics, Professor Holder obtained joint qualifications from Cambridge University and University College Hospital. He furthered his academic pursuits with a Master's degree in Biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD in Physiology from University College London (UCL). His academic journey also included prestigious training fellowships from the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Royal Society University Research Fellowship at UCL.

Throughout his career, Professor Holder has been at the forefront of neurophysiology research, leading a multidisciplinary research group in Medical Physics at UCL. His research endeavours have been supported by prominent institutions such as the Medical Research Council, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA, Glaxo Smith Kline, and Google Health. Notably, his research has led to the development of innovative methods such as Electrical Impedance Tomography, a groundbreaking tool in clinical neuroscience that provides three-dimensional images of fast neural activity in the brain and peripheral nerves.

As a Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Middlesex Hospital and UCH, he has conducted a wide range of diagnostic tests including electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), and nerve conduction studies, contributing to the diagnosis and management of neurological conditions.
