He returned to complete his sub-specialist training in interventional cardiology at the University of Birmingham and was appointed as Consultant Cardiology at Northwest London Hospital and St Mary's Hospital, Paddington in the summer of 2003.Dr Carroll extended his training to ensure dual accreditation in both General Internal Medicine and Cardiology, making him unusual in this respect. This unique expertise ensures he is able see the whole spectrum of emergency medicine illnesses, not just from the perspective of that of the interventional cardiology.
