His subspecialist training in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery included a fellowship in France with Prof. Benabid, generally considered as the founder of deep brain stimulation, which led to a MD degree. He was a senior lecturer in functional neurosurgery at the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery from 2004 to 2006. He then moved to Kings College Hospital London where he is the Professor of Neurosurgery, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Lead for Neuro-Oncology. He is committed to actively developing new and novel therapies for optimal patient care and has published over 300 full papers, abstracts and book chapters in various aspects of neurosurgery including brain tumours; treatment of movement disorders, Parkinson's disease and intractable pain; and back pain and spinal disease. As a result of his continual innovation, he recently launched a new form of spinal cord simulation at Harley Street Clinic targeting the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). In June 2015, Prof. Ashkan was elected as the new President of the British Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and he took up the post in June 2016.
